Navigating the Balancing Act

Juggling the demands of a career and family life can be overwhelming. Finding time for both work responsibilities and quality time with your children can be a constant struggle. We have to wear so many different hats to perform this role efficiently.

As a working mum to three energetic boys, I understand firsthand the challenges that come with juggling motherhood and work. It’s natural to feel stressed or burned out, especially while managing our professional lives too.

The topic of stress comes up all the time with clients. We’re all very aware of how stress negatively impacts us. It makes sense that reducing stress is one of the top things that I see women wanting to change.

Here are some practical solutions to find more balance in your life:

Prioritize Self-Care: Amidst the chaos, it’s easy for mums to neglect their health and well-being. Stress can take a toll on both physical and mental health. Self-care is a priority. Incorporate small self-care practices into your daily routine, such as short workouts, meditation, or reading.

Set Boundaries and Ask for Help: Striking a balance between professional and personal life is crucial but often elusive. Many working mums feel they are constantly torn between their responsibilities at work and home. Set clear boundaries by defining your work hours and family time. One of the hardest things for many women to do is to ask for help. Instead of asking for help, a working mum may just be fueling her stress by trying to do everything. If your children are older, delegate simple tasks to them so they can learn to build good habits early on and play an active role in contributing to the family.

Time Management: One of the most significant challenges for working mums is managing time effectively. Juggling work deadlines, school pickups, and household chores can feel like a never-ending cycle. Create a weekly schedule that prioritizes tasks, including work commitments and family time. Utilize digital tools or planners to set reminders and allocate specific times for work, family activities, and self-care. Don’t forget to build in some self-care time for yourself.

Combating Social Isolation: You are not alone. There are millions of working mums who are going through the same thing you are on a daily basis. Many working mums experience feelings of isolation, as busy schedules can make it hard to maintain friendships. Seek support by connecting with other professional mums. Join a mum’s group, attend networking events, or participate in online communities. Building a support network can provide a sense of belonging and shared experiences.

Let Go of the Guilt: It’s common for working mums to experience guilt, whether it’s about not being present for their children or feeling inadequate at work. This guilt can lead to stress and anxiety. Shift your mindset. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, celebrate the accomplishments and quality moments you create with your family. Remind yourself that a fulfilled mum is better equipped to nurture her family.

Childcare Challenges: Finding reliable childcare can be a significant source of stress, especially when work demands are high. Research childcare options in advance and consider building a network of support with other parents. Sharing responsibilities and resources can lighten the load. Additionally, explore flexible work arrangements with your employer if possible.

Financial Pressures: Managing household finances while juggling a career can create anxiety. Create a budget that outlines your income and expenses. This will help you identify areas where you can save. Consider consulting a financial advisor if you need help navigating financial challenges or planning for the future.

Being a working mum is undoubtedly challenging, but it is also a unique journey filled with growth and resilience. By acknowledging these stressors and implementing practical strategies, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling life.
